The days are getting shorter, the nights are getting colder, and the number of upper lip warmers are at their peak.
This can only mean one thing, Movember has returned.
Originally, the idea for Movember was created in Melbourne 15 years ago. 30 mates from Australia challenged each other to grow out their moustaches for an entire month, to try and bring them back into fashion. Looking like they had just transported out of the 70s, the group gained plenty of attention, and so decided to attach the challenge to a greatly overlooked cause – men’s health. Through doing so, they founded the Movember Foundation and thusly set the trend for all Novembers to come.
Ever since being able to grow a proper moustache myself (and not just a few whiskers), I have always been one to participate in the Movember cause. By the second week when that darker fuzz starts appearing on my top lip, I find it amazing how many people instantly recognise the reason for my odd choice in facial hair. They would tell me how they or someone they know had participated in previous years, and the strange and wonderful styles that were attempted. That right there is the best bit! Something so simple (for some) as to grow a moustache gets so many people discussing something that was avoided for so long. To top it off, the amount of money that does get raised for charities all over, has already exceeded over the $710 million mark!!
Now don’t get me wrong, the whole experience of growing the tash isn’t a pleasant one! There’s the irritated skin, the hair that creeps over the top lip and just gets in the way, and don’t get me started on the comments my girlfriend and family have given me. However, that is just one small price for a month that can go towards raising money to change someone’s life.
Something tells me that you’re all itching to ask me for some fun moustache facts, so I’ll shave you the trouble! Here’s my top 5 tash trivia:
- The King of Hearts is the only king in a deck of cards without a moustache.
- In 1967, the Beatles included cardboard moustaches in their album, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, because the band members were all sporting moustaches on the cover.
- Moustaches are capable of absorbing 20% of their own weight in liquid.
- Alexander the great made all his soldiers shave their moustaches before the battle of Ardela.
- Albert Einstein was not seen without his moustache for over 50 years.
Even though today is the last day of Movember, we still have our Just Giving page open for donations of any size. If you would like to contribute, feel free using the link provided below. Thank you.
