If you’ve been reading this blog for a while, you’ll know that tournament success for our Systems department is nothing new. Sysadmin Dale looks to be carrying that tradition on with yet another win in our Webbie FIFA Tournament, fighting through a difficult start to get his hands on the coveted Webbie Cup.

The event was sponsored by Adam Chappell and Tom Walsh, who brought in their consoles for us to use, and our official food partner for the tournament was Web Applications UK, who graciously provided pizza, cookies and sweets for all.

Group A, consisting of Jamie (Barcelona), Matt (Real Madrid), Me (Manchester City) and Adam (Arsenal) – and Group B, with Chris (Borussia Dortmund), Dale (Juventus), Rik (PSG), Tom (Chelsea), and Craig H. (Atletico Madrid) battled it out in the group stages, with some surprises along the way.

Adam, widely regarded as a potential finalist, admittedly mostly because he owned the game, didn’t manage a single win in Group A, beaten by Jamie and held to draw by Matt and I. The shock of Group B was either a surprisingly capable PSG team under the control of Rik, or the heroic performances of Craig H., who ended up winning 1-0 against Dale having been under the cosh all game. The less said about Dortmund’s performance the better, I think – fair play to Mr. Sweeney for having a go!

Dale was swiftly gaining momentum, dispatching a resilient PSG 3-1 in his final group match. All eyes were on his semi-final tie with Jamie’s Barcelona, who were the firm favourite after a very confident showing in the group stage. Dale’s form continued to snowball and he left Jamie shocked with another convincing 3-1 victory.

As semi-finalist Craig H. dispatched his other opponent (me) with relative ease, the stage looked set for a tense final between Craig and Dale, or so we thought; Dale had reached his top speed and presently went into overdrive, smashing 6 past Craig before he could put a consolation goal away in the late stages. Finishing 7-1, the final was arguably the least competitive game of the tournament.

Emotionally drained and full of pizza, we retired, having confirmed resoundingly that Systems are still the top department when it comes to winning tournaments.

Commiserations Craig – and congrats to Dale! Now to get back to that pool tournament…
