It took all of my emotional strength not to write a song pun title. Please appreciate how difficult this was for me.

As you will probably know, in my guise as the PR/Marketing bloke at Web Apps I get up to some interesting stuff, and on Thursday Naomi and I were on top secret Christmas party business – the context of which I can’t divulge entirely, though I can say we ended up talking to some reps from SMG, a venue management company. They just so happened to have some free tickets to Take That at the Manchester Arena. Not being in the business of turning down freebies, we graciously accepted.

I’m no stranger to live music, having seen countless gigs and even played a few in my time, but I can honestly say I’ve never been to one my mum was so sincerely jealous of, particularly as she paid for a standing ticket the week before we were given box seats for free. Sorry mum. I was a little taken aback at first by the slightly bemusing jazz age style procession that comprised the opening song – I’d never seen a song intro that was so long, never mind so tightly choreographed. Fair play to Gary and co, it was pretty cool.

Not ashamed to admit (and neither will Chief Exec Craig Dean, presumably) that I was soon singing along like a die hard fan with everyone else – although that might have had something more to do with the joy of having pizza and Heineken. That works as an excuse, right? Right…

As job perks go, this one was a little different – but in a surprisingly enjoyable way. Naomi and I have since made plans to visit as many venues as possible in our search to ensure maximum return on corporate freebies. I’ll keep you posted on how we get on.

We’d best get busy – just 6 months ’til Christmas!
