Celebrating Oldham's Charity Spirit

It’s Spring here in Oldham, which means crisp mornings, earlier sunrises, and a bout of the common cold. Apart from a vat of Lemsip, there’s one thing that brightens up our Spring more than anything; it’s the Annual Oldham Mayor’s Civic and Charity Ball!

Hosted at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, the Mayor’s Ball was as ever a glamorous affair, attended by inspirational local people and businesses, corporate sponsors, Members of Parliament and Councillors. It was great to see some familiar faces such as our friends from Kingfisher, O2 and Mahdlo, who showed up with some of their dance club members in tow, who wowed us with a fantastic dance routine later in the night.

As sponsors of the event, the Webbie flag was flying on the screens at the QE Hall. We took our seats and were entertained by some fantastic musicians including the Failsworth Community Band. During his brief speech, Mayor Fida Hussain expressed his delight at seeing so many of his friends and partners under one roof, and that he had the opportunity to raise money for his chosen charities – Support for Young Carers, Alzheimer’s Society, and the Oldham Liason of Ex-Servicemen Welfare Fund.

Hosted by the ever-charismatic Martyn Torr, the charity auction nearly ended in success for Bea and Bo, who could have received a brand new giant teddy bear to play with. Unfortunately we were outbid for the second year running in the stuffed toy segment of the auction. Maybe next time!

Shirking tradition, we didn’t take a customary Webbie table selfie, but we did have our photo taken by a professional from New Image PR!

What? This is how we always look! (By which we mean, like the cast of a 90’s TV show)
