Guess who's back...

So it goes

It has been an exciting month at Windsor Works. Not only did we welcome 13 new Webbies into the family, we also reunited last year’s industrial placement students, Paul and Simon with their fellow colleagues, it was a beautiful moment.

Our industrial placement scheme invites students to work here as full time Software Engineers between their second and final year of university. With previous industrial placement students, we have seen some great success stories of the students progressing into skilled Software Engineers, including Safder and Mark who have now been here for around three years.

Paul and Simon returned to university in July 2012, before I joined Web Applications UK, so I jumped at the chance to get to know them a little better upon their return.

First things first though, I would like to say a huge congratulations to Simon for graduating with a 2:1 degree in Computer Science and Maths from The University of Manchester and to Paul for graduating with a 1st class degree in Computer Science from Manchester Metropolitan University.

Neither could express enough how much their placement year impacted on their overall degree result. Working as a full time Software Engineer on real projects allowed them to put the theories they had learnt during their studies into action, giving them a more solid knowledge base and a real perspective of the industry.

So, a little more about the two of them. Neither of them are originally from Oldham, nor even Manchester for that matter but they both love living and working here. Simon is initially from Southport whilst Paul is a little further afield from Hampshire (you can definitely tell from his accent).

Since graduating, they have both been super busy! Keen festival goer Simon went to Glastonbury, and also found the time for a holiday in France and moving to a new flat! Paul has been equally busy travelling America and becoming a yellow belt in kung fu. Oh and he got married too, so congratulations Paul!

Both were excited to return for a number of reasons. Aside from the amazing people (no bias at all), Paul is looking forward to completing another Microsoft certification, adding to his list of qualifications. Simon echoed this and commented on PDT, a scheme that wasn’t fully in effect during his placement year.

They weren’t the only ones who were excited. Everyone is happy to see them back at Windsor Works so welcome back guys!
