The Fifth One Oldham Business Awards

So it goes

Oldham’s entrepreneurial spirit was out in full force on Friday as we celebrated the borough’s successful businesses at The One Oldham Business Awards. As the awards reached their fifth year, Web Applications UK continued to support them as we have from the very beginning.

Business Editor of the Oldham Chronicle, Martyn Torr was our host for evening; introducing entertainment acts, speakers and awards. Gifted musicians from Oldham Sixth Form College played various instruments as we arrived and two other talented young people performed a comedy sketch before we had our three course meal. Comedian, Josh Daniels was also on hand to make us laugh with his witty one-liners and hilarious song adaptations.

Just before the awards ceremony begun, an inspiring speech was delivered by Council Leader, Jim McMahon. Declaring 2015 as the ‘year of jobs’, the Council have committed to creating 2015 jobs and training opportunities for young people meaning no one is facing unemployment when they leave education. To get there, everyone was asked to pledge what they can. Be that mentoring, work experience, apprenticeships, jobs, training opportunities or supporting local suppliers.

Norman Stoller of the Stoller Charitable Trust supported the cause by pledging £1million over four years. A fantastic start which will make a huge difference to the future of many young people in Oldham. At Web Applications UK, we already offer most of these things, and we pledge to continue to do so as much as possible in the future.

After all the entertainment and announcements, it was time to give some awards out! As The Centre of Excellence sponsored the Business of the Year £1-5m category, Chief Executive, Craig was invited onto stage to present the award. Huge congratulations go to Pearson Solicitors who were the very worthy winners of our award!

As always, it was a fantastic evening, enjoyed by all. The Council are still seeking pledges so if you can offer any time, skills to share or opportunities for young people, we urge you to contact them.
