Vidya has been at Web Applications UK for just over 7 months now and is loving life as a Software Engineer. After discovering Web Applications UK through a careers fair at The University of Manchester, we immediately caught her eye as we had everything she was looking for; a challenging yet educational job in software development, with a fun and social atmosphere located in Manchester.

Originally from India, Vidya moved to the UK two years ago to study for her Master’s Degree in Software Engineering at The University of Manchester. Vidya majored in Computer Science at school but wanted to do something different after that. This led to her to study for a triple degree in Psychology, Communicative English and Literature in one of the major universities in India. After completing a semester there, she realised that she missed programming and decided to take up IT again. Her interest for software engineering developed further during her BTEC course in Information Technology at Cochin University of Science and Technology, India.

Vidya now lives in central Manchester with her flatmate who is training to be a doctor. Although she loves living in the city centre, she spends a lot of her time in Chorlton where most of her friends live and is hoping to move there in the near future. Vidya loves how accessible Web Applications UK is on the Metrolink, making her commute quick and easy.

Before joining us, Vidya worked at The University of Manchester on placement in their IT Services department. Her role involved maintaining the website, adding new functionalities and fixing general errors. Although she enjoyed the work, her passion is software development, and this is the area she wanted to work in.

Vidya is a huge music fan and spends a lot of her spare time going to concerts and gigs. Her best friends are in a band so she enjoys watching and supporting them. In fact, Vidya can sing herself and is currently looking to join a band! Her favourite kind of music is anything from the 60s or 70s that has a happy vibe and instantly uplifts your mood. In particular, she enjoys anything by The Doors, Fleetwood Mac and The Beatles with her favourite song being Octopus Garden. Vidya also loves Indian music, especially anything with a Bollywood feel to it, but hasn’t kept up with the charts since she has been in the UK.

Vidya has had a great 7 months at Web Applications UK, learning a great deal in a somewhat short time. She enjoys the way that she is always encouraged to ask questions if she doesn’t know something. Vidya is part of a team of six including her Senior Engineer and Project Manager meaning she always has someone to turn to if she has a problem. She told me this was extremely comforting as a new starter as she immediately felt welcomed into the team.

Since Vidya has worked here, she has gained a qualification in Web Applications Development with Microsoft .NET Framework 4. For Vidya, this is something that she wasn’t able to do in her previous role and she enjoys how Web Applications UK encourages her to fulfil her potential.

Every Friday morning, Vidya has her personal development time where she puts aside her usual work and can focus on any type of personal development. When she’s not revising for her exams, Vidya spends this time researching mobile app development, something that she is particularly interested in.

All in all, Vidya believes Web Applications UK is a great place to work. She has made some really close friends and is looking forward to learning more over her time here.
