The Oldham Mayor’s Charity Ball is an annual festivity used to raise money for charities important to the Mayor. The current Mayor of Oldham is Councillor David Jones, though during the night we also spotted the former Mayor, Jim McArdle. This year the chosen charities were ACE Centre North, Royal National Lifeboat Institution and Diabetes UK. The night began with a Champagne reception followed by the Mayor’s entrance and the first course. The Saddleworth Male Voice Choir sang through dessert and was extremely entertaining. The songs were recognisable and the choir was able to encourage people to sing along to some of the more well-known tunes. After dinner diners were given the opportunity to dance to DJ Che; Webbies are famously non-dancers (unless of course it is the Christmas Party) but we felt as if we were dancing vicariously through some of the regulars on the dance floor. The night rolled on to the Kyla Brox Band which really was impressive. The lead singer, Kyla, was excellent and the accompanying band was very good as well. We have to admit that we didn’t stay for the entire night (though we did stay long enough for the raffle) and saw other people win a big screen TV, a freezer (or Fridge, it was hard to tell) and a number of other prizes that we jealously watched go to other people. It’s alright, it is all for good causes. Web Applications UK was very proud to have been able to take part in this Charity Ball. The Queen Elizabeth Hall was absolutely filled, we reckon around 400 people were in attendance. The night was a complete success and we hope the donations raised from the night will make an impact for the designated charities. Here’s to next year!
