All the travel industry greats got together on 25th January for the Globe Travel Awards 2012. Gordon, Nick, Kerry, Jeff and Craig Kennedy represented the Web Applications UK team and went down to Grosvenor House hotel in London’s Park Lane to join the celebrations.

The Globe Travel Awards are widely regarded as the pinnacle of the travel industry calendar. Their success is largely attributed to the fact that it remains one of the few awards ceremonies where the winners are voted solely by the industry.

The event consists of around 30 industry awards including honours such as Best Hotel Chain and Best Cruise Company. There are also 7 consumer awards which focus on areas of travel such as Favourite Rail Operator and Favourite Online Booking Website. Thomson Holidays was a big winner this year, scooping three awards while Superbreak, Attraction World and Royal Caribbean all received double honours. Our table showed strong Northern solidarity, getting overly excited when awards were given to Manchester for Best UK Airport and to Alton Towers for Best UK Theme Park.

A whole host of celebrities featured in the ceremony; Heather Small from the M-People opened the show, X Factor star Misha B and beatboxing champion Faith SFX performed and comedian Jack Whitehall presented the awards. The celebrity sightings didn’t stop there either. With the National TV Awards being held in London on the same night, TV presenter Richard Bacon and Alison King (Carla from Coronation Street) were spotted on the train journey home.

The team joined an audience of more than 1,000 and appreciated the champagne reception (some more than others). The celebrations continued long into the night with the sounds of Radio 1 DJ Trevor Nelson. It was a night to be remembered and the stories on their return have entertained us all. We’re looking forward to next year already!
