In 2011, the Web Applications UK Centre of Excellence banner made its first appearance on TV when Oldham Athletic beat MK Dons 2-1. On Sunday 27th January 2013, Oldham played Liverpool at Boundary Park in the FA Cup 4th Round, and the WAUKCE banner made its biggest national appearance on ITV1!

The Centre of Excellence banner is located under the executive boxes close to the home end of the stadium. The action was all down Latics’ end in the first half with Matt Smith scoring Latics’ first goal after just 3 minutes! Even with Suarez scoring a goal for Liverpool, the half time score stood at 2-1 after a second goal from Smith and Oldham looked in a strong position to win the game.

The second half of the game changed slightly when Steven Gerrard was brought on with 35 minutes left. But despite Liverpool bringing out the big names and scoring another goal, right-back Reece Wabara headed the third in for Oldham which was ultimately the match winner for them.

Ten thousand excited fans packed out Boundary Park with millions more watching on TV, great exposure for The Centre of Excellence and a proud moment to be supporting the local side. We even made it into The Sunday Times!

Oldham Athletic now face Everton FC in the 5th Round on Saturday 16th February at home, another chance to see the WAUKCE banner. Oldham beat Everton away in 2008 1-0 meaning they have every chance to knock another Premier League giant out of the competition. Come on Oldham!
