Web Applications Get Their Game On

Those who believe in telekinetics, raise my hand.

Forget Monopoly, Cluedo and Snakes & Ladders, these guys play proper games!

The first meeting of the Web Applications UK Board Game Club was held on Friday evening. With everyone invited, eight players were brave enough to accept the invitation and take on their fellow Webbies. Proposed games were Agricola, Battlestar Galactica, 7 Wonders, Pandemic, Puerto Rico and Last Night on Earth. I have to admit, I hadn’t heard of any of them so I was keen to find out more…

For the first event, the competitors tried out a new game “Citadels”, an eight-player card game of city building and double-crossing politics. Rob Illing took this first victory of the night, fighting off challenges from the next nearest contenders Daniel and Lee, despite Joe stealing all his money on the first turn. Some great comedy backstabbing moments took place as John had his entire hand of cards stolen by Subham, only for Subham to find they were worthless!

The second game of the evening was “7 Wonders”, a game of rival ancient civilisations. Kris reigned supreme, his mighty armies crushing both his neighbours, and outscoring John and Lee.

Lee Tudor, our Technical Director, and Rob Illing, our Services Manager, started the Club as an ideal antidote to computers and videogames – the order of the day was social interaction, and having a good laugh with friends, face to face. Rob Illing told me that it was a great success and the next event is already being planned for Friday 6th July. It says a lot about Web Applications that we want to spend extra time with each other, even on a Friday night!
